Looking after your safety

HealthUnlocked is a peer-support platform, and while most members use it kindly and responsibly, it’s still important to protect your personal information and stay safe online. Below are some tips to help you look after yourself while using the site.

Protect your personal information

For your own safety, please avoid sharing any identifiable details in posts, comments, or private messages, such as:

  • Full name
  • Date of birth
  • Home address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Social media profiles
  • Photos of yourself or others
  • Details that could identify your location (e.g., workplace, school, specific hospitals or clinics)

Be cautious with private messages

Most community interactions happen publicly, which helps keep everyone safer. If you choose to use private messaging:

  • Do not share personal or financial information.
  • Be careful about clicking links sent by other members.
  • If someone is pressuring you, behaving strangely, or asking for private details, please report it.

Be mindful of advice

HealthUnlocked is a place for peer support, not professional guidance. Any advice you receive is based on personal experience and should not replace help from a qualified clinician.

If you read something that worries you or contradicts medical advice you’ve been given, please speak to a healthcare professional.

If someone makes you uncomfortable

If another member makes you feel unsafe or uncomfortable:

  • Stop engaging with them.
  • Report the post, comment, or message.
  • If needed, block the member from contacting you.

If you feel at risk or unwell

If you are struggling, feeling overwhelmed, or thinking about harming yourself:

  • Reach out to a trusted friend or family member if you can.
  • Contact your GP or another healthcare provider.
  • If you are in immediate danger or feel unable to keep yourself safe, go to your nearest Emergency Department or call your local emergency number right away.

You can also find support services on our mental health resources page.

HealthUnlocked is here to provide community, understanding, and shared experiences — not clinical advice or crisis support. Protecting your safety is the most important thing.
